Staying Fresh with Dry Shampoo (For the Busiest of Women)

How often do you wash your hair?

Experts recommend washing your hair every other day, or even every 2 to 3 days, depending on your hair and lifestyle. That’s all fine and well, except when your hair actually looks like it hasn’t been washed in a few days.

That’s where dry shampoo comes in.

Dry shampoo is crucial for those in-between shower days.

We’ll explain it more.

What is Dry Shampoo?

Besides being your hair’s new best friend, dry shampoo usually comes in a powder or spray formula and can be used to reset your hair in between washes.

How does it do that? It’s great for absorbing oil near the roots and can sometimes help give your style more volume.

Does your hair get a little stinky without a wash? Dry shampoo can help with that too, as it can act as an odor absorber.

Dry shampoo absorbs all the negative things in your life hair, like excess oils, elements of sweat, and odor. All while leaving your hair looking, smelling, and feeling fresh.

How does Dry Shampoo Work?

Remember, dry shampoo is meant for those in between days. So, if you think you can toss out all of your shampoos and skip showering, then your scalp will have a lot to say about that.

You see, your scalp is covered with hair follicles that produce sebum, which are meant to soften your hair. Over time, sebum collects in your hair and creates buildup and gives our roots a greasy look.

Dry shampoo helps absorb the oils and odor in your hair to hold you through until your next wash.

When is the Best Time to Use Dry Shampoo?

Before we jump into the best time to use dry shampoo, let’s talk about why it’s necessary. When you wash your hair every single day, you are removing important natural oils (remember sebum?), which can leave your hair feeling dry and brittle. Not to mention, showering daily (especially in hot water) isn’t good for your skin either.

Now just because you shouldn’t be washing your hair every day, doesn’t mean it should look nasty. And that’s where dry shampoo comes in.

You can easily incorporate dry shampoo into your busy schedule. Are you an early morning exerciser? Maybe in the past you would wash your hair after every workout sesh, but now you can pick the less sweaty days (non-cardio) to freshen up with dry shampoo.

Did you just get an amazing blowout and want to hold onto that style for as long as possible? Dry shampoo is here to help.

Other great times to use dry shampoo include rushed mornings where you don’t have time to shower, last-minute plans where you want to look your best, or when you’d like to add a little more volume or texture to your hair, etc.

Some Quick Tips on Using Dry Shampoo

Quick Tip #1 Some of you rebels out there might see ‘dry’ shampoo and wonder if you can use it on wet hair? The answer is, no. Dry shampoo must be used on completely dry hair in order to do its job. If your hair is wet, the dry shampoo can’t absorb the oil produced by your scalp.

Quick Tip #2 Though you can use dry shampoo whenever your heart desires, it’s recommended to use it the night before (if you’re not planning on washing your hair the next morning). Throughout the night, it will absorb the oil in your hair, and in the morning you just have to do some minor touch-ups and your regular styling and you are (re)set.

Quick Tip #3 A little goes a long way. Apply the product to your scalp and roots for the best results. We recommend dividing your hair into sections and pumping the product 1-2 inches from the scalp. Follow up by massaging the powder into the roots. *It may take some trial and error for you to get it just right.*

Quick Tip #4 Dry shampoo can be used as a good primer. Since it adds some volume to your hair you can apply it to your clean hair to add a little texture. This will allow your hair to hold your style without using a lot of hairspray.

Quick Tip #5 It’s not a bad idea to keep your dry shampoo in your bag or purse for emergencies. You know, for those days that you get way sweaty just from walking from your car to work. Or maybe you have bangs that need a little reset in the middle of the day. Stay prepared!
